After split verdict, SC refers law on EC appointment to larger bench
SUMMARY
The Supreme Court delivered a split verdict on the law governing Election Commission appointments. A two-judge bench disagreed on the constitutionality of the new law replacing the collegium-like selection panel with one dominated by the government. The matter has been referred to a larger bench for final decision, keeping the current appointment process intact meanwhile. The 2023 SC ruling had mandated a PM, CJI, and Opposition leader panel, but Parliament passed a new law replacing CJI with a Cabinet Minister, which was challenged as undermining EC independence.
